Sunday Hike July 5 - 10:00am Mt. Pilchuck

This Sunday's hike we will be going up Mt. Pilchuck. This is a well maintained trail with reports of the top have being covered in partially melted snow (as of 6/28/09). It should be a beautiful day so we should be able to see he Puget Sound, Mt. Baker, Mt Rainer, and the entire Cascade range from the lookout.

John will not be joining us...I guess two Rainier summits and a marathon back-to-back are cause for some downtime :-D However, we will have some folks who have hiked this trail before so we won't be heading out into the unknown.

Trail Length: 6 miles (round trip)

Elevation gain: 2,166 feet.

Getting there:

From Seattle, take highway 5 to US-2 (in Everett). Exit on the left to Snohomish Marysvills Rd/WA-204 toward Lake Stevens. Turn Left at WA-9 NE and Right to take State Route 92 through Granite Falls. Continue straight ahead, down Stanley St, and turn left at the stop sign (by the car wash). Go straight through the next stop (now on the Mountain Loop Highway). Continue down Mountain Loop several miles until you go over the silver/blue bridge. Immediately after the bridge, turn right. It is clearly labeled Mt Pilchuck. Follow the well used road until it ends in a parking lot (former ski lodge).

This will take just shy of 2 hours to plan ahead!

Don’t forget snacks, lunch, water, sunscreen, an extra layer in case it’s cold at the top, trekking poles, yaktraks, etc. If you have any questions, contact me at kelliemorrill@adventx.com or call me at 206-909-1830.

Happy Hiking!

Sunday Hike June 28 - 10:00am Mailbox Peak: Redux

Hi Everyone!

I'm going back to Mailbox this Sunday for another hike. I wanted to let everyone know in case you would like to join me. I'm starting at 10:00am from the Blue Gate.

Last week's post gives directions and some information, but here are a few notes to go along with that:

Directions: One of the "forks" is closed on Middle Fork Road, so you have to go left. The Blue Gate on the Right is where you'll park (just fit your car where you can...there isn't an official parking lot here) and the road beyond the gate leads up to the trail head.

The Trail: Last Sunday, the trail was very muddy in spots and my shoes and pants needed a good scrubbing when I got home. You will definatly need trekking poles for going downhill as most of the trail is steep and can be slippery.

Definatly bring enough water and you'll want something substantial to eat along the trail and at the top.

For those of us in pack training, be kind to your knees and keep your pack on the lighter side. The trail is a challenge all on its own.

Please email me (kelliemorrill@adventx.com) or call me (206-909-1830) if you have any questions or need any more info.

For a little inspiration...here is the view from last week. Let's all hope for less clouds this Sunday!

Sunday Hike June 21 - 10:00am Mailbox Peak

Alright everyone…it’s time for Mailbox Peak! This is one of the more difficult hikes that we’ll do, so it should be a great training day!

Trail length (one way) - 2.5 Miles
Elevation Gain - 4000 feet

Getting There

From Seattle take I-90 East past downtown North Bend to Exit 34. Turn left at the Stop. In 0.6 mile turn right onto SE Middle Fork Road (#56). After a mile or so, you will come to a fork and the road will split. It doesn't matter whether you go left or right because both ways converge after a quarter mile. 2.5 miles from the beginning of SE Middle Fork Road, there is an unmarked parking space on the left side of the road (right after gravel road starts).

Don’t forget snacks, lunch, water, sunscreen, an extra layer in case it’s cold at the top, trekking poles, etc.

A Review of the Trail from June 12th: The trail starts off easy and very quickly becomes steep. Look for the Diamond markers on the trees, they will help you keep on your way. There is still a small amount of snow close to the summit, but you only have to walk on snow two or three times for a couple of feet only.

Training Hike Calendar - Corrections

Attention all Hikers!

The Calendar of Training Hikes has two errors:

1. The next June hike is on the 21st, not the 14th.

2. The July hikes are the 5th and 19th, not the 12th.

The calendar itself will be updated as soon as possible.

Please contact Kellie at kelliemorrill@adventx.com with any questions.

Happy hiking!

Sunday Hike May 3 - 9:00am Mt. Si with a 30lb Pack

This Sunday, while John, Ryan and Stephanie are with the marathon & half marathon runners up in Vancouver, we'll be hiking Mt Si with a 30lb pack (or whatever you are currently training with). I'll have extra gallons of water if anyone needs the weight :-)

While we will depart from the parking lot at 9:00am as a group, for those folks who know this trail, this will be an "at your own pace" hike. For everyone else, we'll stick together to make sure everyone gets up and down safely.

The estimated time (up and back) is 5 hours. It's a fairly smooth trail but packs a good amount of elevation over 3000 feet to be precise.

Be sure to eat some breakfast prior to hiking and remember to pack a warm layer(s) of clothing along with hat and gloves. If weather permits we'll take a 1/2 hour break at top. If it's inclement we can take a shorter break. Boots or trail/running shoes are good. Hiking poles optional. Bring snacks or lunch.

And don't forget your yaktraks or other traction device...you never know what the top of Mt. Si will hold!

Directions

Head east on Interstate 90 and get off on Exit 31 (to North Bend), then drive east on North Bend Way and in less than a mile turn left onto Mount Si Road. Cross the Middle Fork Snoqualmie River bridge at 0.3 miles and drive two miles to the trailhead parking lot (there's room for 200 cars), elevation about 750 feet.

If there are questions about gear, directions, car pool etc; please contact Kellie at kelliemorrill@adventx.com.

See you sunday morning!
